Fore-thoughts~

  1. Welcome Back?- The Waste Management Open, which is the opposite of the above list, and an always underrated event brought us many different story lines this weekend, but the main theme was the reemergence of some stars seemingly left behind. Jordan Spieth gave golf a superstar jolt this weekend by teasing his return to the victory circle he has so long avoided. A 61 on Saturday and a tie for the 54-hole lead had the whole golf world thinking that the dorky torchbearer/long ago heir apparent to Tiger’s throne, was back on top. Alas, he did not close the deal. But does that mean he’s not back? I think not. Golf is such a difficult game (big hot take there) and last week Spieth looked like he would not even be the best guy in a Goat Rodeo foursome (if he is on VHelms team of course). Inside joke aside, the point is he looked not like a professional golfer but more a club pro who if he had more time to practice maybe could have made a couple of PGA tournaments (thinking the ones that come after the majors you know with those strong fields). For him to play meaningful golf and have a real shot to win again cannot be understated. The law of averages, a slightly tougher course on Sunday and I am sure an immeasurable amount of pressure knocked him off the top this week, but that is a lot to shoulder in one round even for a former number one and is the first step in getting back (I hope).

It wasn’t all J Spieth though, this week we also saw the return of Rob Grownkowski’s more quotable frat brother Brooks Koepka. He too recently has not looked the same, injuries, too much time not caring about golf, and being just too cool for us all having affected his game. Alas the master of the nonchalant phrase returned and reminded us that no matter what he really is good and very very clutch. I compare him to the band Rush feel free to interpret that anyway you please.

  2. Bowl of what? - Look its not all about golf here at the Watershack and let’s be realistic I am not clever enough to mine for golf only topics every week (hence the sometimes-weekly title) or clever enough to mine for any topics every week so let’s mix it up. The Super Bowl as they call it came and passed again. Like Xmas for middle class parents, it had all the dreams, hopes, and anticipation, then left reminding you that you do have to pay those credit card bills. Another year passed and 5 hours (why is the event so god damn long) of my life I cannot get back (my fault and I am sure it will happen again next year.) From the standard attempt to reinvent America the beautiful and the national anthem (always fail though the woman who did America was a very good guitarist) to it’s over the top never fluid confusing half time show (where was Beyonce? I thought she was always supposed to show up at these) and of course the game that is never as good as that Sunday night game in week 7 with (insert random teams). I would call it a flop again. Wah wah. All I can think after this failed endeavor every year is you know football does makes more sense when applied to soccer and thank god the only sport, I actually truly care about beside golf is hockey. I mean how that is not the most popular team sport I will never know.

The real GOAT!

3. Speaking of Super Bowl - the halftime show, wow I can’t say if it was good or bad because I don’t know I can’t hear it ever. Next year can they get the boys from The Armed to do the sound. Somehow that band whose volatile thrash can only be compared to first degree murder can still somehow make every crunched guitar, manic drum beat and guttural scream clear and concise… well as much as they can be. So, I don’t really give a shit about the Weeknd or the holidays or whatever popstar they bring out, but I might if I could hear it. Also seriously check out the Armed even if it is not your music style, they are one of the most talented bands I have ever heard or had to plug my ears because I am old, and they are making a lot of god damn racket (dad jokes). Their new single is out now, but a few years ago they put out one of the most batshit crazy music video?/short film? I dunno… ever. <—- Check it out

4. I filled the quota, cynical thoughts, shameless plugs for friends, lots of dad jokes, even some positive (my wife, mom, dad, kids, friends etc. say I am too grumpy so have to you know mix it up), so yeah this is the last quota, which is a bit of filler, like the one track on every rock album in the past that was phoned in or every track on all albums now that is not the single. Done. Filler complete. List checked off. See ya next time.
