9/9/2020 ~ Candy, Swear Jars, and 9000 yard courses….

5 ~

Top 5 John Candy flicks, because…I mean, come on, even the most hardened cynic, like myself, cannot deny he was a genuinely funny dude and breaks the stone of my crotchety old man heart.

  1. Uncle Buck

  2. Summer Rental (Sorry I love it)

  3. Great Outdoors

  4. Canadian Bacon

  5. National Lampoon’s Vacation (Isn’t the star but steals the show)

  1. Hot Mic!: I miss the fans, but LOVE the hot mics! It is time for golf to take a step forward and get away from the boring, old, white, stuffy country club image that the game still oozes at times. Having more audible course sounds leads to some unfiltered outbursts (like JT missing his putt a few weeks ago or Kucher’s amish-like self-deprication) that are both inherently funny and make the game way more relatable to those of us who can’t hit the ball 325 yards. I am not saying that broadcasts should be The Wolf of Wall Street, but come on what little kid is watching golf anyway? And you know what fuck the kids for once! If they are watching golf, one F-bomb or “goddamnit Tiger!” Is not going to ruin them, and probably not nearly as bad as the conversations overheard on Fortnite. I love to watch an event and be able to see that these guys on tour are human just like me and my fellow hack buddies. So come on PGA lets hear more occasional fucks, shits, and golly’s (looking at you Kuch.)

  2. Bryson smash!!!: The distance debate rages on, and I stand firmly on the “leave it be” side. Ever since Bryson decided to go full Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle super- villain the world of golf has been living in fear that courses need to start topping out at 9000 yards in order for these tour freaks to be anywhere near par. Commentators, and fellows players alike, are fawning fullmasted over Bryson’s new found distance, but has it really moved the needle? He hasn’t destroyed the game as we know it over the past few months. In fact, other than some video game-like distances and a win on one of the easier tour spots (no offense DGC) he has not done a whole lot. Yea, some tournaments these guys will beat the course senseless, but others we’ve seen them get beaten back. I enjoyed the dynamic of the Northern Trust 30-under victory and then the next week a 1-under at the BMW put you on the first page of the leaderboard. Of course, distance helps, it is no coincidence that the top 4 or 5 in the OWGR are bombers, but tight fairways, thick rough, and quick greens can still neuter even the biggest monster off the tee. Don’t make courses longer, just choose better venues.

  3. Overdraft SZN: New club launch season is officially upon us with the drop of the newest Titleist drivers: the TSi2/3. Christmas for the golf world! Are you buying any new gear this offseason? What’s standing out on the horizon for you?

  4. WatersHack Weekly: Overall I want to take this spot to just put out there that this blog is about interaction and discussion. I want to hear from hacks to sticks about their thoughts on the game, reviews you’re interested in, debates, hot takes, etc. I can feel confident bullshitting about almost anything golf. Either post some comments below or email to fiveandfore@yahoo.com and put WatersHack in the subject line. All topics are fair game, especially ripping on me! Hit ‘em well this week!

Round of the week: Last week at Lakes of Taylor from, probably, one tee too far back
